Assignment 10: Speedlight Flash Part 1

Each student will post their own, unique set of 6 images and descriptions.

  • Shoot with speedlight flash in manual mode.
  • The speedlight must be the main light source (additional continuous light can be added if desired)
  • Use one subject. Subject can be anything, portrait, still life etc - just keep it consistent throughout all images.
  • Create:
    • 1 image with subject lit with on-camera flash, no modifiers
    • 1 image with subject lit with on-camera flash with modifier (diffusion, cinefoil snoot and/or gels)
    • 1 image with subject lit with flash off camera, no modifiers
    • 1 image with subject lit with flash off camera with modifiers (umbrella, softbox, snoot, and/or gels)
    • 1 image with subject lit with flash that shows movement (flash may be on or off camera)
    • 1 image with subject lit with flash - freestyle - you must use the speedlight as you main light source, everything else is up to you

Each image should have a noticeably different look. If the images look too similar try something else within the bounds of the assignment.

Each image should be well-exposed, aesthetically interesting and with intentional framing/background.

Label each image with both camera settings and flash power settings as well as set-up. E.g. Was flash on-camera or off? Were any modifiers used? If off-camera where was light in relation to subject? etc.
